Where & When is the competition?
The Sing Barbados Choir Competition & Festival semi-finals will be held on the 15th & 16th November 2008 at the Frank Collymore Hall and the finals will be held at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre (formerly Sherbourne Conference Centre) on December 7th 2008. Tickets are available from the competing Schools or from www.EarlyBirdTickets.com.
What makes a professional singer?
Any person who performs individually on a regular basis for payment is considered a professional singer.
How many pieces can we enter?
Each choir will be required to enter one piece of their choice. Each piece can be one (1) song or a medley of songs with the minimum stage time being Four (4) minutes and the maximum being Ten (10) minutes. We ask that all pieces be either inspirational or nation building.
Is their a limit to the amount of accompanists?
Yes, we ask that you restrict your accompanists to a maximum of 10 persons. What are the prizes? In all categories a participation certificate will be issued to all participating choirs. The first place in all categories will receive $5000 , second prize $3000 & third prize $2000.
How do you qualify for the special prizes?
Each of the special prizes carry a different criteria:
The People's Choice Award: Prize of $1,000, will be awarded to the choir with the highest mark amongst all categories, voted via text messaging by the public.
- Choir Master's Award: Prize of $ 500 will be awarded to a selected choir master for particularly outstanding performance, selected by the judges – based on preformance, gesticulation, body stance and organisation of choir.
- Best In Show Award: Prize recording contract will be awarded to selected choir, judged best in choreography, performance and dress. The winner will be selected by the judges.
- Nation Building Award: Prize of $1,000 will be awarded to a selected choir, this would take the format of a project dedicated to the theme " We all Must Live", using any form of medium desired and secondly based on their performance. The winner will be selected by the judges.
- HIV / AIDS Awareness Award: Prize of $1,000 will be awarded to the choir who delivers a meaningful presentation and project using any medium desired, on HIV / AIDS awareness.The winner will be selected by the judges.
How many categories are there?
There are Two categories as outlined by the competition this year:
- Primary Schools
- Secondary Schools / Tertiary Schools
Can a choir enter in more than one category?
No, a choir is only allowed to enter in one category, however if a choir sits on 2 different groups no more than 60% of the members would have to be tied to one choir. In terms of an individual who is tied to more than one choir or group, the decision is left up to the choir master.
Who is Sing Caribbean Inc?
Sing Caribbean Inc. is a non-profit association with the aim of developing programs to not only entertain but also to aid in the development of music and culture in our country.
